CNIB Beyond Print at the Black and Caribbean Book Affair

As we embrace Black History Month, CNIB Beyond Print is excited to share an unforgettable experience from one of our own team members, Jason Osborne.

Jason attended the Black and Caribbean Book Affair, an event that not only celebrates literature but also serves as a platform for nurturing connections within the Black and Caribbean communities.

This event holds special significance for us at Beyond Print, as it allows us to further our mission of making culturally significant literature accessible to everyone, regardless of their abilities.

A Special Encounter with Yolanda T. Marshall

Jason had the privilege of meeting the esteemed author Yolanda T. Marshall at the event.

Yolanda, celebrated for her numerous literary contributions with 17 published books to her name, was honoured that evening.

The highlight of Jason’s experience was connecting with Yolanda and discussing the impact of Beyond Print on making her work accessible.

Yolanda shared her excitement about the mission of Beyond Print and expressed gratitude for the production of her children’s book, “Hot Cross Buns for Everyone,” in the printbraille format.

This collaboration allowed blind and partially sighted readers to enjoy her work on an equal footing with their sighted peers. As a testament to the success of our initiative, Yolanda is eager to spread the word to her publisher, ensuring that more of her future works can be made accessible to a broader audience.

Yolanda’s book, “Hot Cross Buns for Everyone,” is an entertaining journey into the world of imagination, friendship, and cultural celebration.

The story captivates young readers and encourages children to embrace diversity and celebrate differences while enjoying a charming and engaging narrative.

In “Hot Cross Buns for Everyone”, follows the story of Jackson, the protagonist, and his friends.

Jackson’s Easter party is a blend of cultures as friends and families team up to bake a variety of hot cross buns.

His friend Liam’s foster parents add a Scottish touch, Dimitri’s dad brings in Greek flair, while a special recipe from Jamaica brings a delightful twist.

As each child arrives, proudly showcasing their unique buns, the party becomes a celebration of diversity.

What makes this story even more special is its accessibility to a wider audience.

“Hot Cross Buns for Everyone” has been thoughtfully produced in printbraille format by CNIB Beyond Print in collaboration with CELA. This ensures that the book can be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of ability.
