CNIB Unified English Braille Proofreading

Unified English Braille Proofreading

This course is geared towards would-be proofreaders, and might also be of benefit to
transcribers and teachers of braille. This course leads to the Letter of Proficiency in Unified
English Braille Proofreading. Upon successful completion, graduates are qualified to
proofread transcriptions of English print materials in contracted Unified English Braille.

The structured curriculum can be followed at your own pace, but must be completed
within eighteen months, including the final examination. Students are assigned a Certified
Instructor who will mark their assignments and provide guidance as necessary and as
requested.

What you’ll learn

There are six lessons (plus a practice test) which include specific aspects of The Rules of
Unified English Braille, Unified English Braille Guidelines for Technical Material, and Braille
Formats: Principles of Print To Braille Transcription. Students will learn to identify rule and
format errors and to record them in a page and line report. The report, based on errors
found in the transcription material, is for the transcriber or, based on the errors found in the
translated material, is for the software facilitator. The practice test is modelled on the final
examination.
